Group Has Nearly 4,000 Members in 100 Countries

TALLAHASSEE, Florida – Jacques Combault, Technical Director at Finley Engineering Group (FIN- LEY) and one of the world’s foremost bridge engineering and construction experts, was elected to head the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineers (IABSE) at the group’s annual sympo- sium in Budapest, Hungary, in September.

Combault will serve as president of the group from November 2007 through October 2010. The IABSE is a scientific/technical association with 3,900 members in 100 countries, including 48 national groups worldwide. Founded in 1929, the IABSE is based in Zurich, Switzerland

“I am very proud for having been elected among four renowned and respected candidates by the 84 mem- bers of the Permanent Committee,” says Combault. “My goal as president will be to make the IABSE even stronger and more useful to its members, the profession, and society as a whole.”

IABSE is an international association serving professionals involved in all aspects of structural engineer- ing, including professors, researchers, designers, suppliers, and contractors. IABSE has the following objectives:

    • promote a worldwide exchange of knowledge
    • identify present and future needs of the society
    • encourage innovations and progress in structural engineering
    • promote major achievements in our global world

Jacques Combault joined Finley Engineering Group in April of 2005 and has helped firm founder Craig Finley grow the firm to nearly 20 employees in just two years.

“Being so closely affiliated with someone of the caliber of Jacques Combault is one of the highlights of my career,” says Finley. “Jacques’ unmatched depth of experience and knowledge in bridge design and construction has been invaluable in not only the work we’re doing at FINLEY, but in broadening the capabilities and insight of our technical staff. He’s a great designer and engineer, but he’s also an outstanding teacher and mentor.”

During his distinguished, award-winning career, Combault has played a major role in some of the most innovative bridge projects of the past several decades, including the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa, the Brotonne Bridge on the Seine River in France, the Rion-Antirion in the Gulf of Corinth, Greece, and the Sutong Bridge Project in China. A frequent collaborator with legendary bridge designer Jean Muller, Combault is a two-time nominee as ENR magazine’s Man of the Year.

In addition to his Man of the Year nominations from ENR, Combault’s long list of honors and recog- nitions includes the Federation International du Beton Medal of Merit Award in 2004, the Award of L’Association Francaise pour la Construction in 1991, and three Innovation Awards from Groupe GTM. He also served as vice president of the IABSE and has been a keynote speaker at many industry confer- ences and meetings.

Combault has a master’s degree in engineering from the Ecole Centrale de Lyon. He spent many years as a professor at the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in the field of construction techniques and has published more than 30 scientific and technical papers.
